Chief Henry Standing Bear read in the newspaper in 1939 that "the sculptor who assisted Borglum at Mt. Rushmore this summer wins first prize at the New York World's Fair."

Standing Bear wrote to Korczak that fall asking, "Will you carve us a mountain so the White men will know the Red man has great heroes, too?"

Thus the Dream was born and the Vision which continues today was begun.

The original heroic size mahogany portrait of Chief Standing Bear was carved in 1940. Korczak gave the sculpture to John F. Kennedy in 1962 when the President dedicated the Oahe Dam near Pierre, SD. It is now in the Kennedy Memorial Library collection in Boston.
