A favorite of many, many of our visitors, this sculpture, created from a single
piece of mahogany with hand tools and sandpaper to finish it, was carved by Korczak
in just five and one half weeks in 1935.
The idea came to him as he was driving home to Boston from California and
saw two horses silhouetted against the sky, "somewhere in the midwest."
A larger-than-life size bronze of Korczak's Fighting Stallions
is the focal point of a state memorial
to Governor George S. Mickelson and seven other South Dakotans.
This is one of only two pieces that Korczak cast during his lifetime.
